Bamboo

Bamboo

Everyone knows the basics about Bamboo. Originally found in Asia, Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth.  Bamboo can grow up to 24 inches a DAY.

Due to the quick growth and reproduction of Bamboo, its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years.  It is pretty common to see people boasting “bamboo floors” in their homes.  However, there are many things Bamboo can be used for.

Other uses for Bamboo include:

  • Medicine.  In Chinese medicine, Bamboo is used to treat infections and made into tonic for respiratory diseases.
  • Culinary. The shoots of Bamboo are edible and frequently found in Asian dishes and broths.
  • Culinary Tools.  You can find Bamboo kitchen utensils and even serving dishes made from this resource.
  • Textiles. Bamboo can be transformed into cloth and it has also been made into paper.
  • Musical Instruments.
  • Construction.  Bamboo can be used to construction homes to bicycles!

Cylinder Solar Light

Cylinder Solar Light

Who said that solar panel lights had to be ugly or expensive?  This beautiful outdoor light from Chiasso.com is both functional and modern.

The best part about installing a light like this one is there is no electricity to mess with and it works fully on solar power.  It is made to resist rust and built to survive the elements outdoors.  At $44.00 – it won’t break the bank!

You can get one here… once they come back into stock!

I just found this Scotch-Brite website about their new line of green cleaning products.  They offer:

  • Scrubbers that are made from the agave plant, a renewable resource.
  • Soap pad that are made from recycled plastic.
  • Wipes that are made with natural fibers derived from bamboo.
  • Biodegradable sponges that are made from natural fibers.

These products can be purchased at Walmart, Target, Shop3M.com, and Giant Eagle (although I’ve never heard of a Giant Eagle before.)

Non-Disposable Cup

I Am Not A Paper Cup

I Am Not A Paper Cup

I often wonder as you look around office space within corporate America “Does the StarTrucks coffee really taste that good, or is the nifty Styrofoam cup part of the dress code?”  I am not a huge coffee fan myself, so I don’t understand the draw.

What I do understand is that 1000’s upon 1000’s of those nifty disposable cups get thrown away every day to sit in a landfill somewhere.  What is a hip (trying to be greener) homeowner to do?

Get a cup that matches, but that is re-usable of course!

Check out the I Am Not A Paper Cup!  This cup retains heat and cool – just like its styrofoam counter part.  And it is an accepted alternative of the corporate office dress code.  Get your very own here.

Find A Recycle Center Near You

July 29th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Go Green

In a personal effort to eliminate all excuses as to why we don’t recycle, I stumbled across the National Recycling Coalition website.

This site provides a search feature for you to type your zip code and what you are wanting to recycle, and it gives you a list of centers in your area.  Take a few minutes to see what they are all about.

Click here to check out the NRC website.
